Episode Notes

A meditation on the trap of chasing splits and the freedom of running the mile you're actually in. How elite athletes use pace as feedback rather than identity, and how the same lens transforms the way you lead, parent and recover.

There's a particular kind of misery available to anyone with a good watch. You go out to run, you feel fine, and then a number tells you that you're slower than you were, and the run becomes a verdict on you as a person.

Pace is feedback. It is not identity. The moment it becomes identity you stop being able to read it honestly, because you need it to say something flattering.

Elite athletes I've been around treat data with a kind of boredom. It's information. Slow today, fine, what does that tell me about yesterday's sleep, about the load, about the stress I'm carrying that has nothing to do with running?

The same trap sits in the office. The metric becomes the mirror. And once you're looking in the mirror, you stop looking at the road.

Presence over pace means running the mile you're actually in. Not the mile you planned, not the mile you ran in 2019.

It's also the cheapest recovery tool there is, because most of the fatigue in a hard week isn't physical. It's the friction of arguing with reality.

One action this week: do one session with the watch on your wrist turned away, or in your pocket. Report on how it felt, not how fast it was.
